Watercolours
"Learning watercolour painting after years of just oils was for me like trying to learn squash after playing only tennis. Quite similar but very very different ! My advice to any aspiring young artist would be to attempt both mediums, one at a time but in tandem, turnabout, perhaps weekly or monthly stints on each. Then you don’t have to “unlearn “ one technique to develop the other. Many principals of art apply equally to any medium but there are marked technical differences in the way these principals are applied and achieved when using completely different materials.
There are many fine artists in NZ equally proficient with both oils and watercolours, but usually with a personal preference for one or the other. Watercolour workshops I have attended include those by Australian artists Joseph Zbukvich, Alvaro Castagnet, Ross Patterson and Greg Allen, all brilliant watercolourists.
